Rita Roy, MD, MSc, President
Dr. Roy is
a physician and is the president and co-founder of Astute Technology.
Dr. Roy's career combines a rare expertise in medicine and technology.
- Co-founder and president of Astute Technology.
- Directed the distance learning initiative for the National Institute’s
of Health (NIH's) Program in Genomic Applications-HOPGENE (2000-2002).
- Served as the Principle Investigator of several National Institutes
of Health (NIH) Small Business Innovations Research (SBIR) grants,
both Phase I and Phase II. (2000-2002).
- Served as the Executive Director of the Health-E foundation (1997-2000),
a 501C-3 organization dedicated to improving patient information through
the use of technology.
- Co-founded and served as President of Medical Consumer Media (1995-2000),
an award-winning internet based medical communications company. Under
Dr. Roy’s management, MCM grew from a basement operation to
a 100 person firm with offices in three cities. Dr. Roy directed the
acquisition of the company by HealthAnswers, Inc. in 2000.
- Served as a Member of the Board of the 1998 World Congress on Information
Technology.
- Served as Director of Education at HT Medical Systems (1994), initiating
case-based simulation for virtual reality training systems. This fundamental
approach to technology based medical training won national and international
acclaim. One of these case simulations is on permanent exhibit at
the Smithsonian Institution. HT Medical Systems was acquired by Immersion
Corporation (NASDQ: IMMR) in 2001.
Dr. Roy concurrently holds an Assistant Research Professorship at The
George Washington University, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology.
Dr. Roy received her medical degree from The George Washington University
Medical Center (GWUMC). She completed post-medical training in General
Surgery at GWUMC. Dr. Roy obtained her Master’s Degree in Biological
Sciences. Dr. Roy holds dual Baccalaureate degrees in Philosophy and Zoology.
She has been the recipient of numerous leadership and industry awards.
She has published over 20 articles on scientific and internet subjects.
Dr. Roy has been a frequent speaker at colleges, universities, medical
centers, and associations. She has appeared in numerous TV and news programs
including Discovery Health, National Public Radio, and The Washington
Post. She is a member of The American Medical Informatics Association
(AMIA), The American Association of Physician Executives (AAPE), and The
American Medical Association (AMA).
